Pay your subs for 2010 to Keith Clays in the Hut on 31st January

Then collect your seed potatoes and get chitting

Also get your onions sets and shallots.

If you have started any broad beans in trays, plant them out once the ground has de-frosted!

 

 

 

 

October

VEGETABLES

Protect salads and late roots crops with horticultural fleece to extend the growing season.

Once the vegetable patch is clear, dig it over for the winter.

Cut down asparagus foliage when the ferns turn yellow.

Too dry at the moment but when the soil improves, plant spring cabbage and overwintering onions sets.  Also plant garlic towards the end of October or early November.

Remove yellowing leaves from winter brassicas.

Dig up witloof chicory and start forcing if required. (Put in boxes)

Pot up herbs for winter use.

Broad beans – too dry at the moment, next month will be ok.

FRUIT

Create new strawberry beds and plant young plants raised from this years runners.

Pick apples and pears mid-month for storing.

Prepare for new fruit trees and plant if conditions allow.

Prune blackberries and hybrid berry fruits.
