What is the Association's policy on the eradication of rats, foxes and cats, the discouragement of keeping chickens, and the banning of dogs on the Bluebell Allotment Site? |

i love this time of the year a time when we alter the clocks and get the extra time in the evening, and constantly searching the ground for things to pop there heads through the soil a magic time .

Storage Container
I'm sure our container was the one right in the middle. I had a grand tour of the container with the Trading Hut Team. I am sure if will provide hours of entertainment. It was lovely in the hut with the stove going. The rain hammering down outside. I will need to remember to take a kettle and mugs down for a brew! |

Chickens
There's foxes round my back garden too (Lakenham, backs onto railway lines, then rivers and open countryside). I bought a flatpack house from a company called Hen House World, plus a run. The house has been OK; it needed two extra bolts to secure a sliding tray to clean it out and few cabin hooks putting in to let you hold doors open. The run was far too small though and was supposed to be bolted onto the house, but was at the wrong height without a floor. Then I saw the house about twenty quid cheaper from a company called something similar, based out Hereford way.
I extended the run using 19*32mm treated battening to make frames of weld mesh, then screwed hem together and re-inforced them with some planks that fell off the Sinegorsk. Hens immediately started laying better for having more space. This weekend I'm going to put in floors for the two bits of the run; one a weld mesh in a frame and the other slats 3" apart.
Keeping hens on an allotment is only really viable if you libe nearby. If you were putting hens on an allotment, I'd have weld mesh buried a good 2', or else coming a good 2' out from the edge of your run. Weld mesh is the more expensive square stuff; it keeps foxes out, unlike hex wire that just keeps chickens in. I'd go about 3-4' high and put a roof on. My run's about 4'*6' wide and long by 3' high. When I'm about I give them free range of most of the garden, with anything I don't want digging up fenced off with hex wire.
Feed costs about £7 a month; I'm getting 3 or 4 eggs with big golden yolks a day.

I've been watching the rain and thinking "Great". I'm going to get cracking on the digging and clearing the last few brambles to spud it up in the spring.Space at the front; need to call Alan and get a delivery.
First I've got to get my lean to built in the back garden; clear some space to finally transplant
my hazel and dogwood saplings. Hope the chickens haven't killed them with all their scratching. |
